Buildings, bridges, vehicles, appliances, pipelines and machinery all depend on steel. Some companies make it from iron ore or recycled scrap; others are mini-mills, rolling mills or processors that cut, coat and form steel into sheet, plate, bar, tube, beams and wire. Distributors and service centers often sit between the mills and end users.
Precision pays off when sourcing steel. Grade and specification come first, because chemistry and mechanical properties vary widely across carbon, alloy and stainless steels. Ask whether the supplier provides mill test reports, what sizes and tolerances it can hold, and whether it offers processing such as cutting to length, slitting or coating. Order size matters as well, since mills may require larger minimums than service centers. Delivery schedules, freight on heavy loads and how a supplier communicates when supply is tight are worth discussing before an order is placed.
