About
Calandra’s Bakery opened in Newark, New Jersey, in 1962 as a small Italian and French bakery started by an Italian immigrant who had arrived in the United States five years earlier. The bakery built its reputation on bread, and the founder’s two sons joined the business and carried on its principles of hard work, family and customer service.
Today the Newark bakery is a 50,000-square-foot operation, and the family runs two more bakeries in Fairfield and Caldwell. The three bakeries deliver to more than 500 supermarkets, delis and restaurants across the tri-state area, and they also supply catering halls, hotels and sports venues including MetLife Stadium, Prudential Center and Red Bull Arena.
The Calandra family has expanded well beyond baking. It owns and operates restaurants, four hotels and apartment buildings in northern New Jersey, and it produces its own line of olive oil, coffee, fresh pasta, homemade sauces and wines from a family vineyard in Italy. The bakeries also take wedding and custom cake orders and run wholesale accounts for restaurants.
