LaMonica Fine Foods traces its start to 1923, when the family opened the 13th Avenue Fish Market in Brooklyn, New York. In 1952 the business moved to Cape May, New Jersey, took the name Cape May Foods and became a fishing operation that did its own processing and packing. It moved inland to Burleigh in 1969, began canning scungilli, sea clams and clam juice, and later added ocean clams, clam sauces and chowders.

In 2000 the company moved to a larger, newer plant in Millville, New Jersey, and along the way it took the LaMonica Fine Foods name. It celebrated 100 years in business in 2023 and is still run by the founding family’s third and fourth generations. The company says it is the largest hand-shucking clam supplier in the country, working clams that arrive daily from its boats out of Atlantic City.

According to New Jersey’s manufacturing extension program (NJMEP), the company’s Atlantic surf clams, ocean quahogs and conch are wild caught in or off New Jersey waters and landed at New Jersey ports. Its NJMEP profile (last updated 2022) says LaMonica employs more than 200 people, uses many local vendors and distributes nationally to restaurants, distributors and retailers, with ShopRite as its largest local retailer.
