About
World Cat builds outboard-powered catamarans and calls itself the world’s largest maker of power catamarans, with more than 80,000 customers worldwide. A brand of HC Composites LLC, it has been headquartered in Tarboro, North Carolina, since 2002, and its website says all World Cat boats are built in a 140,000-square-foot facility in Tarboro. The company traces its roots to Glacier Bay boats in the Pacific Northwest.
In August 2020 the North Carolina Department of Commerce announced that World Cat would open a new production facility in Greenville, in Pitt County, adding 60 jobs and investing about $8.9 million, supported by a $180,000 One North Carolina Fund grant. The release said the expansion would add 230,000 square feet of manufacturing space, that the company would keep its 180-person Tarboro workforce, and that demand for 36- to 50-foot custom World Cats drove the move. World Cat won the 2019 Governor’s Export Award as a top global reach exporter for its international dealer network.
The current model list includes center consoles from the 235 to the 400CC-X, dual consoles from the 230DC to the 400DC-X Island, and the 230SD sun deck. World Cat argues its twin hulls ride smoother than a monohull and offer more deck space, stability and fuel economy, plus the redundancy of two engines.
